Keith Burkinshaw

An Evening With Keith Burkinshaw

It’s not often you get to meet a true Spurs legend but that was exactly what we did on Friday 5th June at the Hilton Hotel, Swindon. Keith is one of our most successful managers in our history so to be able to hear him talk openly about his life and experiences with Spurs was a true honour.

The evening was organised expertly once again by Roman and the room and tables looked fantastic with flags everywhere. A nice touch on the tables was being given a running order of the evening together with a short history of Keith’s exploits with Spurs.
We all listened for nearly 2 hours as Keith talked about his early days as a minor down the pits in Yorkshire and then onto his early football career up north. Roman did well once again as the interviewer but when he started to question Keith about his time at Spurs, I think his source was a year out!! It must have happened about 4 or 5 times, Roman asked a question to Keith and was promptly corrected. It all added to the good natured and fun evening.

It was fascinating hearing about how he made “his” team during the early eighties gaining success in the FA cup twice and the UEFA cup in 1984. He said he was able to sign who he wanted and had complete control over the budget for transfers. How he signed Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa was just incredible. Apparently he took a flight to Argentina, spoke to Ossie on one day and in about 10 minutes had concluded the deal. Ossie then said,”I have a friend who is called Ricky Villa, would you like to sign him as well?” He met him the next day and in about the same amount of time had signed him. You have to remember that both these players had just won the world cup with Argentina in the summer of 1978. What a coup for Keith and Tottenham and the rest as they say is history.
He also spoke about his departure from Tottenham and how it was the hardest decision of his footballing life. Indeed had he been able to improve on the squad over the coming seasons, who knows, we may even have gone even closer to winning the league.

Keith then spent a good while signing various bits of memorabilia and having his photograph taken with whoever wanted one. He really is a true gent and an absolute Spurs legend.

The evening was then capped off by a very good comedian and magician and the usual raffle with lots of Spurs goodies on offer.

As this legend event followed the AGM a week earlier, the Swindon Spurs Member of the year was presented on the same evening by Keith Burkinshaw. And the recipient was none other than myself, Martin Croucher. I have to say it was a complete shock and i was very humbled to think that i warranted such an award. I took on this website back in October and have loved doing it ever since. I would like to think that between us all, the website is now a proud reflection of the great club that we all support. A big thank you to the committee and to all the members who read and contribute to the site on a regular basis. To be presented the award by the great Keith Burkinshaw was just unreal. A fantastic memory that will live with me for a lifetime.
