Dave Mackay

An Evening With Dave Mackay
More Photos

I have only ever seen Dave Mackay play on old Spurs videos as a very hard but fair defender. Indeed we have all seen that legendary photo of him holding billy Bremner by his collar. But when you meet him you wouldn't believe it was him. A very quietly spoken man with a broad scottich accent. It was amazing to be able to get up close and personal with a true legend who arguably played in the greatest ever Spurs team ever assembled. He spoke of the amazing players including Danny Blanchflower and of the fantastic Bill Nicholson.

You could tell he was a true scot and inparticular Hearts man through and through. He said he was surprised when Tottenham came in for him in the late 50's and it hadn't crossed him mind to leave his beloved Hearts. Indeed he hadn't even looked at the league table before he signed so it came as quite a shock to find Tottenham fighting relegation in that first season. But thankfully he halped steer them to saftey and then came the success. First the double, then again the FA Cup but missed out on the 1963 Cup Winners Cup due to a broken leg. Indeed that famous shot of him holding Billy Bremner happened because Bremner had taken a kick at the leg which had been broken. He knew another break would end his career so took things into his own hands! He also spoke of his time in being a manager and the way the game wa sgoing today.

You could imagine Dave Mackay being the kind of bloke you would share a pint with on a sunday afternnon down the pub chewing over the weekens football results, a legend if ever there was one.
